Asst. Prof. Mert Yildirim’s Article Published in the Q1-Ranked Journal Polymers


The study by Asst. Prof. Mert Yıldırım, which comparatively examines the physical, mechanical, and microstructural properties of composite materials reinforced with jute and false banana fibers, contributes to sustainable engineering applications and was published in the Q1-ranked journal Polymers.


The article entitled “Physical, Tensile, and Microstructural Properties of Jute/False Banana Fiber-Reinforced Unsaturated Polyester Resin Composites”, authored by Asst. Prof. Mert Yildirim, a faculty member of the Department of Industrial Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture, Istanbul Gelisim University, has been published in Polymers (Impact Factor: 5.8; CiteScore: 11.0), a journal indexed in SCIE and Scopus and ranked in the Q1 quartile in both the Journal Citation Reports (JCR) and CiteScore rankings.

The study investigated the potential use of sustainable and renewable natural fibers in composite materials. Within this scope, the physical, mechanical, and microstructural properties of unsaturated polyester resin-based composites reinforced with jute fiber, false banana fiber, and hybrid structures combining both fibers were comparatively examined.

The findings of the study demonstrated that renewable lignocellulosic fibers, such as jute and false banana fibers, have significant potential for the development of more sustainable composite materials, particularly for lightweight, non-load-bearing, or semi-structural engineering applications.
