Asst. Prof. Mert Yıldırım Wins Award in National R&D and Innovation Competition!


Asst. Prof. Mert Yıldırım, Assistant Professor at Istanbul Gelisim University, won first prize in the Academic Category at the National Industry-Oriented R&D and Innovation Project Competition organized by AOSB with his circular economy-based advanced materials technologies project.


İstanbul Gelişim University Faculty of Engineering and Architecture, Department of Industrial Engineering Asst. Prof. Mert Yıldırım achieved great success with his advanced material technologies project developed with a circular economy approach. Yıldırım was deemed worthy of the first place award in the “Academician Category” in the “National Industry-Focused R&D and Innovation Project Competition” organized by Adana Hacı Sabancı Organized Industrial Zone (AOSB) Directorate for the fifth time this year.
 
At the Top Among 182 Projects

Organized with the aim of integrating new technologies into industry, strengthening university-industry cooperation and spreading the culture of innovation, the competition attracted great interest from all over Türkiye this year as well. 182 projects from 62 different universities were included in the meticulously conducted evaluation process.
The projects were evaluated using a completely “blind referee” method based on scientific merit and potential contribution to industrial applications. Thanks to this method, the identities of the candidates were kept confidential, and a transparent and objective evaluation process was ensured.
 
Emphasis on Circular Economy

The award-winning project of Asst. Prof. Mert Yıldırım, Department of Industrial Engineering, Faculty of Engineering and Architecture, focuses on the development of sustainable advanced material technologies and is shaped on the basis of the circular economy model. This approach aims to provide environmentally friendly and economic solutions to the industry in line with the principles of efficient use of resources and recycling of waste. Yıldırım's work was found remarkable in terms of both its academic originality and sectoral applicability.
The successful projects were shared with the public at the award ceremony held in Adana on May 21, 2025. The award was presented to Asst. Prof. Mert Yıldırım by Adana Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Zeydan Karalar. The ceremony was met with great interest from industry representatives, academics and local administrators.
 
Strong Contribution to University-Industry Collaboration

This award, which is a significant source of pride for Istanbul Gelisim University, also once again demonstrated the university’s visionary stance in the field of R&D and innovation. Yıldırım’s success demonstrates the potential of university-industry collaboration to produce tangible and qualified outputs, while also setting an example that will inspire young researchers.
